Blackmoor were crowned Hampshire’s Green Jackets champions for the first time in the 43-year history of the junior inter-club knockout after beating Dummer in the final at Hockley.
The four-point victory in the stableford competition featuring Alexander Tupper, Lawrence Valente and Jamie Rodger, meant the East Hampshire club represented the county in last week’s England Junior Champion Club tournament, at Oxfordshire’s Frilford Heath.
Maisie Ord replaced Rodger as they faced England’s best junior clubs and they began at a cracking pace.
With the best two scores on Frilford’s Green course counting, they looked set for a strong challenge going into the final day.
Tupper, playing off five, carded a fine level-par 70 which included four birdies, earning him 39 points, while Valente weighed in with 37 points as the five-handicapper shot 72.
They were just four points behind St Mellion, from Cornwall, alongside Shropshire’s Horsehay Village in second.
But with glory beckoning – no Hampshire team had won the title in the event’s 16-year history – Blackmoor could not keep up with the leaders.
Valente’s fine 72, including a birdie and a net eagle, racked up 37 points, but Tupper faded with an 81 which brought in 28 points. However, Ord bounced back with a very fruitful 82 which, because of her handicap, proudced 35 points.
It left Blackmoor in seventh place, 11 points behind the eventual winners, Horsehay.
