A CAMPAIGN is on the hunt for new on-call firefighters to join the Haslemere Fire Station.
Crew Commander Dominic Spooner returned to Haslemere station from Guildford four months ago and has sought to find on-call firefighters to help with both emergencies and community outreach.
He said: “The recruitment for on-call firefighters has been low across the county. Haslemere need a little bit of help as they are low on office numbers.”
Dominic, who has worked in the fire service for 16 years, said the opportunity was rewarding as “it gives them something to give back to the community” and that it wasn’t just about putting out fires, but “engaging with the community” through activities such as open days and school visits.
When asked what they look for in a potential candidate, Dominic said it would be someone with “reasonable common sense”, “a good level of fitness” and “practical and problem-solving abilities”. They must also live within four minutes of Haslemere station.
