THE unsuccessful High Court bid reported in last week’s Herald, to overturn an appeal rejecting plans to build 28 houses at Longdene House, Haslemere, in Surrey Hills area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), has had a knock-on effect.

Following the legal judgement, appellants Monkhill Ltd have now withdrawn an almost identical appeal for 28 homes that was due to be held in October.

Welcoming the decision, a Waverley Borough Council spokesperson said: “We’re pleased that the appeal has been withdrawn.

“This application was not suitable and would have had an adverse impact on the character and appearance of the area.”

Waverley planners granted full consent in May for a change of use for Longdene House from office to residential plus a detached garage.

Outline approval was also given to demolish two existing dwellings, greenhouses and outbuildings in the grounds and erect three new homes.
