FARNHAM Public Art Trust will present an illustrated talk of great interest to everyone who has visited Watts Gallery in Compton on Monday, November 21.
Dr Desna Greenhow, who has worked on curatorial projects at Watts Gallery since 2005, will be giving a talk on the subject of her recently published book ‘The Diary of Mary Watts 1887-1904’.
Mary Watts (1849-1938), herself a Victorian progressive and artistic visionary, was the adoring second wife of George Frederick Watts, and the diary, which has never been published before, covers the period of her marriage to him up to his death in 1904.
This private diary, in Mary’s tiny and almost illegible handwriting, has now been transcribed by Desna Greenhow, a process she describes as a series of eureka moments of discovery about a very remarkable woman.
The lecture will present the intimate tale of the home life of GF Watts and his wife with cameo appearances from many art celebrities of the period.
It will take place on Monday, November 21, at the St Joan’s Centre, Tilford Road, Farnham, GU9 8DJ.
Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start and tickets, payable at the door, cost £6 (students £2). For further information phone 01252 702449 or visit the website www.farnhampublicarttrust.co.uk.
