CYPRIOT restaurant Yiayias at The Fox in The Bourne has delivered a mezze of delicious free food to grateful staff and patients at Farnham’s Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

The initiative was supported by the founder of the Farnham Rants Facebook community Lee Moran, and saw Yiayias cook up trays of moussaka, Greek salads, vegetarian options and much more for the hospice to share out.

Yiayias owner Paul Pyrgoudes told the Herald: “We wanted to do something for a charity on our doorstep, and you can’t get more on our doorstep than Phyllis Tuckwell. After all, Yiayias means grandma, so it was just about taking care of the people in that environment.

“They loved it. They were really overwhelmed.”

In an email thanking Yiayias, the hospice’s reception manager Julia Morpeth said the food was so delicious, “almost everything disappeared in about ten minutes!” She added: “They were thrilled. I know it gave a huge boost to everyone at the hospice who are working so hard at the moment.”

Although Yiayia’s doors remain closed, Paul and his team have been operating a successful takeaway service throughout lockdown.

Paul said: “There was never any intention to make money – it was more about being there for the community, giving a discount to the NHS and just being a way to keep people safe by bringing food to their door.

“We didn’t put any of our prices up, even though supplier payments went through the roof, and we didn’t do a delivery charge – just because it wasn’t the right thing to do.”
