HASLEMERE cats’ adoption centre had its last ‘homing’ day on Saturday, before a transformation into a new facility for homeless felines.

It was a ‘purrfect’ day for 19 cats who found new homes, including Oreo, one of the centre’s long term ‘guests’ when he was adopted by the Frankham family.

Sian Crosbie, deputy manager of the centre in Upper Hammer Lane, said: “He was one of our longer staying cats as he found adjusting to a penned environment more stressful than some of our other cats.

“It was lovely when the Frankham family fell in love with him. Oreo was collected on Monday and we believe he’s settling in well. Although we had advertised it as the ‘last chance to adopt’ – we do still have cats in care that are looking for homes. 19 cats in total were reserved on the day and 27 are still needing homes.

“We will continue to try and find homes for our remaining cats in care up until October 14. After this period all cats still looking for homes will be transferred to other Cats Protection Centres.”

“Our centre is one of the oldest Cats Protection centres and is in desperate need of modernisation,” said Sian.

The rebuilding project is due to start on Monday, October 19, and is estimated to take six months.

The complete transformation will include a new reception, vet room, intake area, offices and staff room under one roof.

The cats will have brand new UPVC modular built pens, which will be nearly twice the size of their current accommodation.

There are currently no isolation facilities at the centre, but the rebuild will see a separate purpose built isolation unit enabling staff and volunteers to care for unwell cats and kittens.

Sian added: “Cats Protection rely heavily on donations and legacies from the public and this has helped tremendously to make our rebuild possible.

“We will still be available to contact and will have a small number of pens at a local cattery where we hope to continue homing and helping
