HASLEMERE residents battling against Waverley's £342,000 scheme to turn Wey Hill Fairground into a permanent pay-and-display car park have won a stay of execution.

More than 1,700 people responded to the public ballot mounted by localism group Haslemere Vision to find out what residents in the town wanted .

A resounding 94 per cent supported the group's call for nothing to be done until alternative uses had been fully considered by the community.
