THE chapel choir of King Edward’s Witley School was invited to perform in the City of London on the Feast of Candlemas at the annual service for the election of the new Master of the Worshipful Company of Horners, in St James Church.
Students performed Parry’s I Was Glad, and Call of Wisdom by local composer Will Todd which was commissioned by the company.
During the formal dinner, which followed the service, year 10 student Max, one of King Edward’s music scholars, performed a solo trumpet recital.
The new master is alderman Gordon Warwick Haines. He and his wife Caroline have a long-standing connection with King Edward’s and have both served as governors.
The concert reinforced King Edward’s close links with the City of London.
The school was inspired by 16th-century Bishop of London Nicholas Ridley, whose vision was to create a place for the training and education of poor children in 1553.
Stasio Sliwka, director of music at King Edward’s, told The Herald: “It was an honour and pleasure for the choir to be invited to participate in this special commemorative event and a wonderful experience that each pupil will be able to look back on years from now.”
