A FURTHER five people were honoured for their outstanding contribution to life in Haslemere, at a ceremony in the council chamber, on Monday.
It takes the number of awards given for service to the local area up to 70.
The original idea came from Sir Ray Tindle, proprietor of The Herald, who presented Haslemere Town Council with a number of medals to be given in recognition of exceptional service to Haslemere by individuals.
A panel, including representatives from the Rotary Club, Tindle Newspapers and other civic figures, was set up under an independent chairman to consider names submitted by residents.
In the absence of panel chairman Hamish Donaldson, John Patrick read out a short citation for each person receiving the honour. Mayor of Haslemere, Melanie Odell, who had herself received the award in December 2011, presented the medals and ribbons, as well as giving a longer resumé of each person’s particular service.
The citations read as follows: Michael Bawtree (services to Haslemere and District Twinning), Kate Colley (services to the U3A), Ruth Holden (services to Cancer Research, Haslemere), Cyndy Lancaster (services to Haslemere in numerous capactities), and Brenda Reid (services to the town through Haslemere Housing Association).
Recipients and their guests then enjoyed wine and refreshments.
Residents can now nominate extra special people for the next award ceremony to be held in spring 2016.
Forms are available from Haslemere Town Council, or online at www.haslemere. com/awards
