Alton Morris, Knickerbocker Glory, Minden Rose and MayFlower Morris celebrated New Year’s Day by dancing in Alton’s Market Square.

There was a good audience turnout to get 2023 off to a good start, and each side took turns to perform a dance in their individual tradition.

Alton Morris danced in the Border tradition, Knickerbocker Glory used the Appalachian style, Minden Rose did Garland dancing and MayFlower Morris danced in the North West tradition.

The audience also got a chance to join in with the Morris dancers afterwards before the four sides retired to The Market Hotel for a music jam session.

Some of Alton Morris’s new recruits performed for the first time, and the warm welcome and cheers from the crowd certainly boosted their confidence.

The four new recruits were able to show off their newly learnt skills. One of them, David Witting, said: “I can’t believe that I only started going along in November, I’ve learnt so much and I’m having a blast.

“I was very nervous when we started but the audience were wonderful and I can’t wait for the next time we dance out.”

Alton Morris is currently finalising its dancing programme for the summer. To find out more or to book the side, visit altonmorris.co.uk, email [email protected] or call Karen on 07752 269523.
