MORE than 700 cyclists got into gear last Sunday, for Little Lumpy 2016 – the popular annual ‘sportive’ mounted by Haslemere Fringe Festival.

Haslemere Citizens Advice Bureau was the partner charity for this year’s not-for-profit event, supported by Cycleworks.

Cyclists could pedal one of four circular routes from Woolmer Hill Sports Association pavilion, either 20, 40, 60 or 100 miles into some of the prettiest parts of the Sussex and Hampshire Weald to the South Downs with some testing climbs.

Fringe Festival chairman Ken Griffiths told The Herald: “As in previous years, our riders were able to enjoy the warm welcome and home-baked cakes at the feeding stations around the course, all manned by a dedicated group of volunteers, whose efforts seem to have become legendary.

“The tempting selection of over 4,000 pieces of cake, probably the best to be found at any Cycling Sportive throughout the country, were appreciated by all.

“Additional high protein food of bananas and peanuts were donated by Tesco of Haslemere.”

• Haslemere Hash House Harriers members (H4) ran their 350th hash from The Red Lion pub, in Godalming, on May 1.

Since forming in 1987, every first Sunday in the month, H4 run over local countryside “enjoying fresh air, healthy exercise, beautiful views and most of all good company”.

Hashing first started in the jungles of Malaysia and has since spread to most corners of the world. It involves tracing and following a laid trail at moderate pace avoiding false twists and turns along a route of around five miles. Newcomers are welcome. Email [email protected]
