HASLEMERE’S Percy Walker-Smith has completed a 12-hour bike ride for Pancreatic Cancer Action.

He pedalled more than 250km from 6am to 6pm.

After the shock loss of close family friend Rod Kohler to this disease two years ago, Percy took it upon himself to raise money for the charity.

He has been a keen bike rider at home and overseas since the age of 14.

To ensure family and friends could support him throughout the gruelling ride, Percy planned a 23km route in the local area, giving him the chance to fuel himself with food and water every few laps.

During his journey on June 11, the Haslemere resident passed his home town, Fernhurst and Lickfold several times, in his mission of reaching the 250km mark.

He said: “It was my best day on a bike so far. The event was everything I wanted it to be, despite the lockdown – and the local community really came together.

“Around 40 people supported me on the day and we ensured everyone was socially distanced.”

Percy has so far raised more than £2,300, which is more than double his initial target.

He was surprised and thankful at the number of donations in such a small amount of time – and nearly reached his £1,000 goal in the first five days.

“I was very surprised by the donations – I didn’t think people would be able to donate because of coronavirus and others giving money to the NHS in this time of crisis,” he added.

The money will be donated towards Pancreatic Cancer Action, a locally-based charity that has the aim of ensuring people are diagnosed early with this type of cancer.

Its work includes raising awareness of pancreatic cancer and funding research, providing education for professionals in the healthcare industry and providing support to patients.

This could go a long way to making sure more people can get surgery in time to increase their chances of survival from this disease – which is currently the only cure.

People are still donating to the cause. To support Percy after his remarkable ride, see the website https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/
