GRAYSHOTT Surgery marked the end of an era when its rock, much-loved receptionist Janet Cooling, finally called it a day after 50 years of loyal service, on Monday.

Mrs Cooling first worked for Dr Pullen, when the surgery was still at Beacon Hill and her daughter was a baby.

She moved with the practice to its current home in Grayshott in the early 1970s. Despite officially retiring more than 20 years ago, she has regularly been on reception duties ever since, covering for colleagues who were on leave or unwell.

Practice manager Sue Browning said:“Janet was always willing to come in at the last minute to cover in emergencies.

“She took on all the changes and new technology over the years with ease. She is well-loved and respected by her colleagues. They have been amazed by her energy – she’s always ‘full of beans’ and a wonderful example to the younger members of the team. Our patients know her well and her smiling face behind the reception desk is very reassuring.”

Acknowledging his mother’s dedication, Mrs Cooling’s son Peter said all the family – children, grandchildren and great grandchildren – sent their love to her on an historic day.

Surgery partner Dr Claire Patten, who has known Janet since she was a child, presented her with a leaving bouquet.

Fellow partner Dr Lance Cavannagh said: “No one can remember a time before Janet worked at the surgery, She has been a constant feature throughout a long period of great upheaval. I am one of the senior doctors and I was five years old when Janet started work here.

“Unfailingly cheerful, she has been a great favourite with the patients over the years.”
