HASLEMERE Mayor Malcolm Carter launched the 2017 Project Wenceslas at Haslewey Community Centre, in Wey Hill, and hopes are high the initiative will raise even more than last year.

Once again, Farnham Lions are inviting any pensioners not needing their winter fuel allowances to donate them to help families and individuals, who are seriously struggling to cook and keep warm this winter.

Last year’s generous donations from local residents in Haslemere and Farnham raised more than £18,000, enabling Waverley Citizens’ Advice Bureaux to clear their clients’ fuel debts and the distribution of numerous grants to needy families identified by Sure Start Centres and Home/School link workers.

Mr Carter said “I know many people in Haslemere have trouble staying warm over the winter and the Lions’ imaginative project helps so many people in need at this time of year.

Lions president Andrew Lodge said; “Donors can be assured that all funds raised are used for the purposes of relieving fuel debt and poverty by making payments direct to the utility companies.

“There are no overheads and every pound is spent on fuel.”
