Major roadworks by Surrey County Council, that will close a section of busy through route Lower Street, look set to cause lengthy delays in Haslemere starting on Monday (August 5).
Lower Street will be closed between the junction with A286 Shepherds Hill and Sandrock for utility and flood alleviation works.
The works are scheduled to be carried out in phases to minimise disruption over an 18-month period. Temporary closures will, however, be required 24 hours a day.
A lengthy diversion will redirect traffic via High Street, West Street, Chestnut Avenue, Bridge Street and Tanners Lane.
Access for pedestrians will be maintained throughout, as well as access for emergency services, residents and businesses – but residents have voiced concern.
One objected: “This time it will be the death knell for some shops just barely hanging on. I’ve lived in Haslemere for 15 years and never seen a flood on Lower Street. I’ve seen huge puddles caused by uncleared drains but these won’t magically get cleaned with these works.”
