‘I HAVE been MP for South West Surrey for 14 years and despite nine years in the cabinet, I have never forgotten my responsibilities as local MP.

I grew up in Surrey and now live in both London and Surrey with my wife and three children, now aged five, seven and nine. I have just taught my five-year-old to ride a bike on Thursley Common – the joys of not being foreign secretary.

I believe passionately that politics has to change: we have to put behind us the paralysis of Brexit, unblock parliament and move on to tackling big social issues such as social care and climate change.

Having been the longest-serving health secretary I know how important local services are for Haslemere – and I fought successfully to stop the closure not just of the Minor Injuries Unit but the dementia day centre now called the Hunter Centre, and also the Royal Surrey accident and emergency department and Haslemere Hospital when they were under threat.

I am an entrepreneur who has set up two charities because I believe in modern, centre-ground conservatism.

Without a strong economy we will not have the resources to invest in public services.

But we will lose the trust of young people if we don’t tackle climate change urgently and that must be our next national endeavour.’

‘I LIVE in Farnham with my wife and two children.

We feel proud and lucky to live in such a beautiful part of our country but I’m dismayed when I see that even in such a wealthy community, our schools and hospitals are struggling and food banks are a necessity for so many to get by.

I served for 12 years in the Royal Air Force and I feel that service is in my DNA.

Our Armed Forces are great at pulling together to achieve results that punch well above their weight.

They have taught me that through collective endeavour, we can achieve great things.

That’s why I chose the Labour Party, because together we can build a society with world-class institutions that serve the community and create fairness and opportunity.

I’m standing in this election to provide a real choice for the people of this constituency.

I want to make people’s lives better and to improve the environment for us all.’

‘I WAS born in Devon but brought up and raised here in Surrey in an army family.

I went to school in Guildford and went on to study undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Surrey.

My background focussed upon international relations and defence and I am currently working locally leading on compliance, ethics and corporate social responsibility for a large international company.

I have spent the last two years as a Godalming town councillor and Waverley borough councillor and since May have been leader of the town council – in co-operation with the Green Party – and deputy leader of the borough council – in co-operation with the Farnham Residents.

As a borough councillor I frequently hit barriers to helping people that are created by national policy.

My main priority in this election will be to campaign to stop Brexit. I voted to remain and I firmly believe the deal put forward by the Conservatives is neither Brexit nor in any way good for the economy or our country as a whole.

I will also fight the damaging cuts to the NHS, continue to build upon my local work in combating the climate emergency and to campaign for genuinely affordable and social housing for local people and key workers.

I live in Godalming and enjoy travelling and, when I get the time, I enjoy singing in local choral groups.’
