A HUGE moon added extra drama at a spectacular 2017 Chiddingfold Bonfire Night, which is on track to raise around £8,000 to support elderly village residents.

Members of the 400-strong torchlight procession wound their way to the village green to ignite the bonfire, which was topped by a guy created by St Mary’s Primary School.

Haslemere Rotary Club members helped collect donations on the night to swell this year’s total and pupils from Hindhead’s Stepping Stones School enjoyed a grandstand view – either from the school marquee or the top deck of Hindhead’s Cookie Bar Bus, which was busy serving up refreshments.

Bonfire marshals included Sarah and Stewart Manning, who enjoyed their first visit to the bonfire three years ago so much, they moved to the village and signed up as volunteer helpers.

Before the dazzling firework display orchestrated by F1 Pyro, MC Mike Danson gave a short eulogy followed by a round of applause in memory of loyal bonfire supporter Richard Woolford, who sadly passed away three weeks ago.

Bonfire committee chairman Simon Manuel said: “The whole night was absolutely incredible. I’m worried how we are going to surpass it next year. The whole sky was filled with gold floaty bits at the end.

“It was the first time Haslemere Rotary has helped us out and it was nice our two organisations came together.

“It’s the third year Stepping Stones have joined us and they are now a big part of our celebrations.

“A big thank-you to all our volunteers – it’s a privilege to be their chairman – and to our sponsors, suppliers and stallholders.”
