SURREY County Council has come under fire from Haslemere and District Chamber of Trade for damaging local businesses unnecessarily during the six-weeks roadworks now under way to resurface the A286 between Witley Common and Grayswood.

Chamber president Craig McGowan has urged the council to make sure it consults members prior to any future closures to prevent the problems caused by poor signage, which traders claim has driven customers away even though they can still be reached.
