CONCERNS have been raised over an oil slick found in Shottermill Pond.

Herald reader Chris Stacey spotted the oil slick last week and has written a letter listing her concerns, which has been published in this week’s paper.

And West Sussex County Council has confirmed it is aware of the oil in Shottermill Pond.

In her letter, Chris said: “Apparently, the oil is coming/running off the highway into the ponds.

“The National Trust has been strongly trying to get the West Sussex highway authority to divert the highway to protect the ponds from the run-off of oil and salt going into this fresh spring-water pond(s).”

In response, a spokesperson from West Sussex County Council said the council is working with the National Trust to try to solve the problem.

The spokesperson said: “Protecting and preserving the environment across West Sussex is one of our key priorities.

“We’re aware of a small oil film recently occurring at Shottermill Pond and we’re monitoring the situation closely.

“We’re in direct contact with the National Trust and working in conjunction with them to detect the cause and explore what options are available.

“If members of the public see significant oil spills on the highway they should contact us on 01243 642105.”
