THE National Trust’s half-term ’history and mystery trail’ at Hindhead Common and the Devil’s Punch Bowl culminated in a special day of bushcraft and storytelling.

Having found out all about the legend of Thor and Hindhead’s spooky past, visitors were treated to a masterful demonstration of traditional fire lighting techniques courtesy of bush craft expert and National Trust volunteer Miles Cooper.

Miles is a professional firefighter, so everyone was in good hands.

Visitors also had a chance to “meet” the late great Haslemere resident Sir Robert Hunter – a founder of the National Trust – thanks to actor and author John Owen Smith.

As well as bringing to life the early days of the trust and the common, Sir Robert was also on hand to read to the children and discuss his play A Balance of Trust.

Saturday’s event ended with toasting marshmallows round the fire with National Trust community and learning officer Alan Taylor, and with younger families borrowing story books to read under the trees.
