SWEDISH folk art straw goats on loan fro the Horniman Museum are one of the curiosities on show at Haslemere Museum’s major exhibition to tell the story of how the town became a creative hub for the Arts and Crafts movement.
‘The Rustic Renaissance’ continues until September 2, and features objects from its remarkable European Peasant Arts Collection, as well as rarely seen textile designs made by local weavers.
Collections manager Lindsay Moreton said: “The Peasant Art Society were determined to revive lost country crafts, so they set up craft workshops and weaving houses in the town teaching local girls to weave.
“They produced many different types of crafts, from striking hand woven textiles to printed cards, some of which survive in our collection.”
