A life-sized nativity scene is taking shape in the main porch at St Matthew’s Church in Blackmoor this festive season.

The tableau has been a regular feature over many Christmas seasons in the past – and if you have sharp eyes, you can see a little squirrel and a hedgehog lurking by the hessian!

The nativity scene will be completed on Christmas morning with the arrival of the Christ Child.

Debbie Matthias, a St Matthew’s parishioner, said: “The tableau is always a delight and this magical time is celebrated by all who visit the church.”

On Sunday, December 4, a Carols by Lantern service (pictured above) was held outside in the churchyard at 5pm. Bells rang to call people to the churchyard and Rev Wendy Mallas led the prayers, with readings and singing by members of the congregation and visitors.

Debbie said: “About 100 people came, which was excellent bearing in mind the competition with the World Cup and the England football team’s imminent match!”

Warmed by delicious mulled wine and mince pies, voices rang out with Away in a Manager, O Come All Ye Faithful, When Shepherds Watched, Silent Night – all the favourites!

This was the third time the carols service had been held in the churchyard, having been started with socially-distanced lit candles during the pandemic, with 200 happy people joining in.

The remaining schedule for St Matthew’s festivities is as follows, with bells ringing out for the half hour preceding the stated time:

Sunday, December 11 at 10am – Eucharist led by Rev Wendy.

Saturday, December 17 at 3pm – Children’s Crib Service. Come dressed as your favourite character in the Christmas story. The youth group are performing a short play.
