A Haslemere woman has completed a unique marathon around the town to raise funds for charity, after not one, but two, marathons she planned to run failed to materialise.

Iona Rayner, who lives in Weysprings with her family, trained to run the Brighton Marathon in April, but she had to miss out because she got Covid-19 the week before the race.

Iona then trained for a marathon in Richmond, which was cancelled because of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

So Iona decided to run her marathon around the hills of Haslemere, finishing her 26.2 miles on Weysprings to the support of friends and neighbours.

Iona ran on the hills around the Punch Bowl and Blackdown. She has raised more than £2,500 for Parkinson’s UK so far.

Iona’s husband Andrew said: “We are so proud of her, and so grateful to everyone who came out and cheered her on and gave sponsorship to her worthy cause.

“Running for Parkinson’s UK means a lot to Iona, who is a careworker for Haslemere Homecare and helps many people suffering with the condition.

“Her mum was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s and the run was a great way for Iona to say thank you to Parkinson’s UK for all the work and support they offer.”
