HASLEMERE Town Council has temporarily fenced off Lion Green to prevent it being damaged by being used as an overflow car park for M&S, as it was last year.
The area has recently been reseeded and the town council has erected the paling fencing on either side of the road in order to protect the green and allow the grass to grow back.
The fencing was erected after shoppers used the green as a car park.
Appealing to motorists to keep off Lion Green this week, the town council posted on Facebook: “Last year Lion Green was used by some people as an overflow car park shopping at M&S.
“There was a lot of damage done.
“This year we have fenced off the green to prevent parking, and yet apparently there’s one person parked on it at the moment in the only space left unfenced, because we didn’t think anyone would.
“Yes, grass grows back, but people were seen using cardboard to get off there on Friday, because the green is so wet and there are massive tyre tracks.
“So please respect the fencing and don’t park on Lion Green.”
