MEMBERS and friends of the Haslemere branch of The Royal Society of St George, the town mayor and mayoress, Haslemere Chamber of Commerce president and headteachers and pupils from affiliated schools, St Ives and Camelsdale, joined St George, the dragon, the damsel and her handmaiden for a short ceremony at the war memorial on Tuesday.

A wreath of red roses was laid for St George’s Day and the flag of St George was raised and then lowered to half mast as a sign of respect for those who lost their lives in the Sri Lanka bombings.

Branch members plus St George and the dragon then presented roses and flags to the children and thrilled several nursery schools with a special visit.

St George’s Day was celebrated on Easter Saturday by Chiddingfold Tipteerers, who staged a traditional play for customers at The Crown Inn.
