The mayor of Haslemere was joined by Haslemere residents and Ukrainian nationals on Friday morning to mark the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A minute's silence was held at 11am at the town's war memorial green in Haslemere High Street as the Ukrainian flag was raised.

The mayor, Jacquie Keen, said: "Today we are marking the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the suffering of its people.

"It is impossible for us to imagine the pain and trauma you are going through, particularly those who are separated from loved ones.

"Haslemere has been proud to welcome Ukrainian families and I thank the host families for their support, it is a privilege to have you here.

"Let us all hope for a speedy and peaceful outcome to this very sad and unwarranted war".
