FORMER Haslemere mayor and current town councillor Melanie Odell laid a wreath of red roses at the town’s war memorial in the High Street on Saturday morning to mark St George’s Day.

A handful of members from the Haslemere branch of the Royal Society of St George watched.

Once there would have been flags flying and celebrations in the town to mark the anniversary of England’s patron saint – but as the traffic roared by and people walked by they didn’t seem to notice the simple rose wreath marking Haslemere’s tribute to St George.

Cllr Odell was joined by her husband – Cllr David Round – and society members Fay Foster and Ken Griffiths.

Cllr Odell asked for one minute’s silence to remember the English men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Her Majesty the Queen was thanked for her dedication and service over the past 70 years and congratulations were offered for her 96th birthday.
