CHAWTON Park bowlers were involved in 12 national competition matches last week. Unfortunately for the club, four were all-Chawton affairs.

Charlie Spear played an O60s singles against Graham Robinson, eventually beating his club-mate 21-18 in a close-fought match. He and Robinson then joined up for their second match of the day, beating Adam White’s four 16-14 in another close encounter.

Finally, Spear paired up with Gary Johnson to register a third win over Chawton team-mates, Dave Atwell and Peter Slingo.

Slingo recorded a comfortable 21-7 win over Brian Baxendale (Riverside) in the O60s singles and Dave Turner and Basa Smith won their O60s pairs match against Derek Fulker and Peter Line (Atherley).

Graham Robinson had that fours win, but suffered defeats in his national triples, O50s triples and O60s pairs.

Chawton’s tale of woe continued with losses for Adam White at Banister Park in the national triples and then with Dick Holden at Atherley with a below-par performance against an in-form Martin Wise.

Dave Sims, Basa Smith and Holden slipped to defeat against Steve Whitehead (Banister Park).

Chawton Ladies came up against a second Bournemouth team in the Mason Trophy (O60s) and, after a fine win in the previous round, it was back down to earth as both rinks suffered heavy defeats.

In an all-Chawton national pairs match, Lesley Johnson and Margaret Holden overcame a strong challenge from Beryl Collier and Margaret Leppard, winning 17-11.

In friendly matches, Chawton were comfortable winners over Meon Valley, but lost to Loddon Vale by one shot.
