IT’S been a mixed bag of results over the last fortnight for Alton Bowling Club.

Local rivals David Sims (Alton BC) and Dick Holden (Alton Social) met in the Hampshire Four-Wood singles. After some magnificent bowling in a very close-fought match, Sims edged a 20-19 victory.

Two Alton BC teams were drawn against each other in the men’s County Fours preliminary round. After another exciting encounter, Paul Schofield, David Sims, John Blair and Matt Philipson defeated Ron Roberts, Bernard Abate, Andy Payne and John Driver by 21-16. Roberts’ team will now meet Oakley in the first round.

Norma Craighill and Linda Habberfield played their opening ladies’ County Pairs game at Fleet Social on a hot afternoon. After 19 ends, it was all-square at 12-12, but Fleet pulled ahead in the last two ends to win by five shots.

In the Whitchurch League, Alton A won 4-1 away to St Mary Bourne Eagles and then beat Hook 4-1 at home. The B team clinched a 31/2-11/2 home win against Old Basing Royalists and followed up with a victory at Friary.

However, Alton lost 4-1 to Oakley in the Basingstoke Fours League. And in the Three Counties League, Alton never mastered the Liphook green and went down heavily 5-0.

• Averil Adams, president of the North Hampshire Women’s Bowling Association, held her President’s Day at Oakley Bowling Club. Linda Habberfield represented Alton BC at the lunch and game of ‘yardstick’, followed by tea and prize-giving.
