WHAT a fascinating game bowls can be. Just seven months ago, Chawton Park and Palmerston faced each other to decide who would be Bramley Bowl champions and Chawton were well beaten.

Last weekend, the same teams met in the second league match of the season and Chawton, coming out all guns blazing, gained a resounding 115-52 victory.

Palmerston has one of the quickest indoor greens, never easy to adjust to, but the away rinks led by Mark Fyfield and Adam White dominated from end one and secured a 65-18 overall advantage.

At Chawton, Graham Robinson’s rink never looked back after losing the first two ends and romped to a 31-11 victory. Nathan Beeson’s rink suffered another narrow defeat, losing their advantage over the last few ends, but it was still an emphatic victory for the Chawton men who go top of the Bramley Bowl league.

It was a busy week for Chawton’s national competitors. In the men’s pairs, Charlie Spear and Gary Johnson recorded a 23-16 win over Atherley and teamed up again for a 19-10 victory over clubmates Robert Hutchinson and Graham Robinson in the O60s pairs.

However, Dick Holden and John Kellow lost 9-21 to the Banister Park duo of Neville Scovell and Steve Whitehead.

In the triples, Graham Robinson’s team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat at Banister Park, winning 18-16. Adam White’s triple were comfortable 23-6 winners against Steve Whitehead’s Banister Park.

Kate and Mark Fyfield beat Chawton clubmates Linda Habberfield and Charlie Spear 15-6 in the mixed pairs. Lesley and Gary Johnson lost to the Whiteheads (Banister Park) by the narrowest of margins, 14-15.

Margaret Holden began her ladies’ singles campaign with a convincing 21-6 victory over Alice Lovett of Loddon Vale.

Chawton Park defeated visitors Oakley BC in the weekend friendly.
