FOLLOWING on from their success last season, when they won Division Five of the Surrey Championship, Churt CC entered the South League T20 indoor competition, playing matches on Sundays at George Abbott School in Guildford.

The format is 12 six-ball overs per side, with batsmen retiring at 25 runs, and there are other rules unique to indoor cricket.

After three matches, Churt had lost twice and AZ Sports, national quarter-finalists last year, were threatening to run away with the league. But Churt then won their last five matches, including a demolition of AZ Sports in the penultimate fixture. That left Churt needing to win their last match, and by a margin, to finish top on net run-rate. This was achieved, thanks to a massive victory over Merrow.

Churt now face Hampton Wick Royals (Outer B League champions) in the next round, on January 8 at George Abbott School (9pm).

Dan Higgins’ side will be facing Hampton Wick in the SC Division Four next season, so this will be an opportunity to size up future opponents.
