AN excellent weekend for Liphook, and for Ryan Covey in particular, continued with a dominant display against Easton & Martyr Worthy in the Hampshire Regional final of the Village Cup on Sunday.
Liphook beat the Hampshire League County One side by eight wickets and will now host Berkshire champions Cookham Dean in the fifth round on June 24.
Easton, put in by Sean Burton, posted a respectable 166-8 in their 40 overs. Burton and Gearge Neave made early inroads and gave the visitors no easy runs, but opener Jon Ames made 33 and then skipper Ben Stanbrook held his side together with a fine 56, well supported by Jamie Banks (29). Anthony White picked up 3-41.
Covey, having bowled four overs for 12 runs, batted throughout Liphook’s reply and his 104 not out from 81 balls ensured a comfortable victory. Remarkably, considering his prolific run-making, it was Covey’s maiden competitive century.
The opener never gave a chance, dictating the pace of the innings with a range of drives and cuts. He was well supported by the dependable Harry Munt (37) as Liphook coasted home in the 37th over.
After an early setback, Rowledge launched a blistering attack on the home bowlers.
The small ground is made for big hitting and Ricky Yates (82) and Sam Plater (67) had 158-1 on the board at 20 overs.
Adam Goulder (3-52) and Hally Baldock then snapped up three quick wickets and the run-rate slowed, but useful contributions from Sam Moseley (31) and Sam Marshall (27 not out) got Rowledge up to a daunting 301-8.
Frensham made a quickfire start, with Tom Charman blasting 34 and punishing anything up to him.
At 89-5, the game was drifting, but spirited late- order knocks from Goulder, Jordan Frost and Tim Knight kept the large crowd entertained and Frensham mustered a respectable 220. The wickets were shared by Plater, Steve Martin, Ollie Baker and David Lloyd.
