HEAVY downpours severely disrupted the I’Anson schedule on Saturday, but the rain was localised and Grayswood won a truncated match at Pirbright to leave them requiring just two points from their last two fixtures for the championship.
Grayshott, their only rivals, did their best to win in the time available before the rain arrived. They skittled Witley out for 37 in 21.4 overs, with Danny Brown taking 6-5 in 6.4 overs, but the home team’s reply lasted just three balls.
In Division Two, second-placed Fernhurst were facing a tough run-chase after Tongham amassed 204-7 at Poyle Road (Adam Farrier 67, Scott Meyer 43 not out). And the visitors were a shaky 22-2 in the ninth over when the game was abandoned.
Brook, without a game last weekend, will secure the title if they beat The Bourne this Saturday. Hindhead prop up the table after losing to Frensham II. It was Hindhead’s 14th loss of the season.
Tilford II put the final touches to their Division Three title, beating second-placed Bramley to claim the Miller Cup. Wood Street took over second spot with their victory at Milford.
Unbeaten Midhurst are the worthy Division Four champions, with Grafham & Smithbrook runners-up.
Wrecclesham finish top of Division?Five after a run of 14 consecutive victories, leaving runners-up Frensham IV far behind.
But it’s been a good year for the Frensham club, with their first team currently third in Division One, the second XI mid-table in Division Two and the third and fourth XIs third and second respectively in their divisions.
A good season, too, for Fernhurst who, apart from challenging strongly for the Division Two crown, have seen their 2nd XI take the Division Six championship ahead of Bramley II.
Batting was not easy on a soft track at Pirbright and Grayswood struggled at first to reach a rain-reduced target after a spirited home side had posted 141, with Robbie Jones hitting a run-a-ball 60.
Inserted by Alastair Gloak, Pirbright were quickly in trouble (10-2) against Andy Gloak and Iain Jackson, Ivan Wright sportingly walking for a catch behind.
However, Jones raced into the 20s with four boundaries off Jackson and a six off Gloak. He continued to attack, taking 10 off Max Beckett’s first over and also punishing Alastair Gloak.
Beckett, on his first-team debut, kept his head and conceded only eight more runs in his five overs. Henry Hind helped bring the run-rate down, while Cameron Kent made the vital breakthrough by bowling Jones who had hit 60 out of 81 on the board, including seven fours and a six.
Rupert Howe had dropped anchor with six runs off 59 balls before running himself out and captain Ian Milton and Ryland Kelly grafted away, the latter making 26 as Pirbright extended their innings into the 45th over.
Grayswood needed someone to show stickability in the difficult conditions and opener Tom Barnardo filled that role by making 34 not out in almost two hours.
Milton and, in particular, Howe made life difficult for the batsmen until, at 27-1, a downpour reduced the total overs to 34 and Grayswood’s target to 107.
At 65-4, Howe having struck twice, Grayswood needed to score at more than four an over. But Pirbright had dropped Barnardo and he was joined by Alastair Gloak who played the bowling with soft hands and no little skill.
The run-rate picked up, Barnardo pulling Awais Khan for six over mid-wicket. The pair, in fact, won the game at a canter with 33 balls to spare, Gloak (28 not out) finishing with a six into the car park.
Grayswood visit Chiddingfold this Saturday, while Grayshott are home to Tilford.
Frensham beat Tilford by five wickets in a rain-affected match at the Green. After losing what transpired to be a vital toss, Tilford were put in and lost four wickets for just 22 runs, with Sam Charman claiming three of them.
Jake Austin made a characteristically quick 39 and John Hunt contributed 31 in his last game of the season. Otherwise, there was little resistance to the Frensham bowlers who all took wickets, Sam Charman finishing with 3-21 in his nine overs.
Tilford were all out for 148 in the 43rd over, shortly after tea which had been taken early.
With 10 overs lost to the weather, Frensham’s target was reduced to 116 from 35 overs. Jason Stones and Huw Town-Jones removed openers George Breddy and Alex Warren with only eight runs scored, but number 3 James Wood held the innings together with a fine and chanceless 47 not out. Wood guided the visitors home with seven overs to spare.
In Division Two, Hindhead elected to bat away to Frensham II, but slumped to a dismal 48 all out on a sluggish pitch. Slow bowlers Adam Page, Tim Knight and Ben Maxwell did the damage for the home side.
Hindhead did pick up two early wickets in reply, but Leon Ellen and Jack Richards quickly reached the rain-reduced total of 36. A day to forget with the bat for Hindhead.
Elstead started the day with eight players, later increased to ten after recruiting Pat Murphy, but totalled a healthy 194-5 against Harting. It was another good day for the Holland family, with opener Sam, a Surrey U14 batsman, making 79 (11 fours) at the top of the order and Max scoring 53 not out at number 4.
Harting’s victory target was revised due to the rain, but they managed only 119-7 in 29 overs (A White 37 not out).
Badshot Lea plundered the Thursley bowling and scored heavily all down the order. Number 7 Aryobi made 44, but ‘Extras’ was the chief contributor with 67 as the home side racked up 282-8.
Thursley, after a decent start (Justin Hurley 31, Steve Fuller 25), subsided to 133 all out.
Tilford II clinched the Division Three Miller Cup in ruthless style as they dismissed Bramley for 42 in 23.2 overs. The opening attack of Ben Matthews and Johnny Barran demolished the top and middle order and Jack Cantwell applied the coup d’état by taking 4-7 in 14 balls.
Tilford lost three wickets in reply, but knocked off the runs in just eight overs, captain Martin Cantwell leading them home with 21 not out.
Wood Street won a one-sided match at Milford. Put in to bat, the home side struggled to 93 all out in 34 overs against Wood Street’s strong attack. Five bowlers shared the wickets and only Gordon Gwilliam (23) made a score of note.
Openers Josh Dobson (35 not out) and Craig Williams (31 not out) wasted no time and Wood Street reached the rain-adjusted target of 69 in only nine overs. Williams had earlier been Wood Street’s most successful bowler with 3-17.
Dogmersfield II continued their excellent run of form with a nine-wicket victory at Peper Harow. The home side totalled a reasonable 151-7, but Dogmersfield openers Raza (59 not out) and Raja (59) flayed the bowling and victory was achieved in only 15.2 overs.
Abandoned games: Div I – Blackheath (60-3) v Chiddingfold (150-8); Grayshott (3-0) v Witley (37); Headley v Dogmersfield (123-5). Div II – Tongham (204-7) v Fernhurst (22-2). Div III – Grayshott III v Blackheath II (221-5); Grayswood II (87-9) v Headley II.
