Badshot Lea first team coach Victor Ocansey was left to bemoan fine margins after the Baggies lost 1-0 at home to Ascot United in the Isthmian League South Central Division on bank holiday Monday.

Sean McCormack scored the only goal in the 64th minute to give the visitors the three points at Westfield Lane.

Ocansey felt the game could have gone either way and hinged on key moments.

“It’s very difficult at the moment,” said Ocansey.

“The boys are putting in good performances, but what is letting us down is the quality the other teams bring and how we deal with it.

“I think we dealt with it quite well against Ascot – we were quite worried about balls in our box, but I think we defended that really well.

“It was the first time this season we’ve played Saturday, Monday – so it was about letting the ball do the work for us and not blowing out too early.

“We were fitter than them and kept going, but one long ball has made the difference – which is very frustrating.

“Maybe we could have kept the ball rather than forcing a ball and their keeper getting it. He didn’t even pick it up – he turned it over first time and then they’ve showed quality with their first touch.

“It was a great ball and sometimes you’ve got to give credit to the opposition.

“One moment of quality has won them the game.”

The Baggies pushed hard for an equaliser after falling behind, but the ball just wouldn’t drop for the home side.

“When we’re playing teams now they look to get a goal and go in a low block and try to force us to break them down,” said Ocansey.

“We get half-chances, but our decision making in that final third is just not clicking at the moment for us.

“It will come because there’s quality in that changing room and it’s just a matter of time.

“We’re emphasising quality all the time – the detail behind it and the technique is down to the players.

“Defensively we have to put a bit of onus on the defenders because if we keep a clean sheet we get a point – so it works both ways.”

Monday’s loss followed Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Southall.

The Baggies were 3-0 down at half-time, before Tane Caubo pulled a goal back in the second half.

Next up for the Baggies is a trip to Thatcham Town on Saturday, and Ocansey is keen to get some points on the board.

“It’s disappointing to come away from the weekend with no points,” he said.

“On Saturday we’re keen to get some points. We’ll reset, train again on Thursday and then go again on Saturday.

“We’re still positive – three defeats isn’t the end of the world but we’ve got to learn quickly and keep moving on.”
