Fawley 0, Alton Town 1
ALTON Town’s bid to move back into the top four of Wessex Division One was scuppered by the wet weather on Tuesday night.
The Brewers were due to make the short trip across East Hampshire to face Petersfield Town, but the Love Lane pitch was deemed unplayable after heavy rain from Storm Ciara hit the town on Sunday.
It leaves Alton in sixth place, just six points behind leaders US Portsmouth, after a one-goal win against Fawley at the weekend.
Alton travelled to Fawley on Saturday looking to keep their recent good form going – and they returned home after a scrappy game with all three points and a ninth clean sheet of the season to keep pace with the promotion hopefuls.
With unavailability and injuries, Brewers boss Kevin Adair was forced to make changes with Jamie Phillips and Luke Perkins coming in after missing Tuesday’s Russell Cotes Cup victory against Fareham Town. Scott Sanderson (unavailable) and George Bowerman (injured) were the players to make way.
The game was decided midway through the first half as Sean Evans, with his first league goal of the season, gave Alton a lead they never looked like they were going to lose.
Considering Fawley scored seven in a thumping win over Folland Sports the previous midweek, it was an all-round good defensive performance by the Brewers.
Alton will look to continue their promotion push when they travel to face mid-table Romsey Town tomorrow (kick-off 3pm).
Alton Town: Courtnage, Wright, M Graham, Phillips, Moore, Evans, Black, Benham, Perkins, O Graham, Knight. Subs (all used): Horton, Grindel, Bowerman.
*Alton have been drawn at home to Wessex Premier Division Lymington Town in the semi-finals of the Russell Cotes Cup. The game will be played on Tuesday, March 17, at The Enclosure.
