TWO strong and evenly matched sides locked horns when Cowdray Park Golf Club entertained Bramley in the first Surrey & West Sussex Winter League match of the season.
It was nip-and-tuck all the way, but Cowdray, after starting with a half, won the other three matches to run out 31/2-1/2 victors.
Results (Cowdray named first): David Tilley & Peter Hardcastle halved with Martin Cryer & Mike Sheridan; Mark Upton & Graham Thompson beat Dick Humphrey & Anthony Fey 2&1; John Newman & Chris Hutchings beat Terry Vermigle & Terry Adams 5&4; Frank Cheevers & Mark Kelly beat Peter Longford & Tony Lake 4&3.
The results of Cowdray Park Seniors’ November Stableford would also decide the 2015 Eclectic standings.
A near full house turned out for this last stableford of the year, the December competition being replaced by the Keith Chapman Trophy, named in memory of the Cowdray stalwart who died recently.
Some coped with the tricky conditions better than others and the Division One winner was Peter Hallt with 39 points, on countback from Mike Burgess and Roger Poat, followed by single-figure handicappers John Doran and Phil Harrison, both on 37.
Division Two provided the best score, Graham Thompson winning with 40 points. Pat Bonner was second with 39, followed by Mike Holden, Phil Morris and Peter Clarke, all on 36.
David Tilley beat John Doran in an exciting singles knockout final for the Lait Trophy. The match was finally decided on the second extra hole.
