FATHER-and-son James and Charlie Newman have won the respective adult and junior singles knockout trophies at Hindhead Golf Club.
James triumphed in the 36-hole final of the Canada Cup, a trophy presented to Hindhead in 1919 as thanks from the Canadian officers posted nearby during World War One who had made use of the course.
The matchplay competition was contested by over 120 members, with the initial round starting back in March.
Charlie Newman saw off all junior opposition to win the Jack Jackson Trophy. The 18-year-old, who plays off 14, beat 15 other juniors to reach a tightly contested final against up-and-coming Miles Huffam, aged 11, who plays of a 23 handicap.
Charlie, the junior captain, has had an extremely successful year, also winning the Simon Johns Millennium Trophy and the Corben Trophy.
Hindhead’s junior section, organised by James Newman, has had an excellent season. They reached the England Club Championship finals, held at Frilford Heath in August, representing both the club and Surrey, and also won their zone in the Guildford & District League.
“We have a strong group of developing golfers who are using the EGU Golf Passport programme,” said James.
Hindhead juniors have again reached the final of the Christies Cup, a Surrey inter-club knockout competition, which they won last year. The 2016 final will take place at Puttenham Golf Club, with Hindhead up against Addington Palace.
