THE two leading league teams found themselves contesting a quarter-final of the Aldershot Table Tennis League Div I Cup and it proved to be an enthralling encounter.
Central A fielded Peter Millard, Phil Snelson and Paul Baker, while cup holders Tennis A comprised Eliot Tilley, Paul Myers and Ross Saxby.
The first six sets were shared. Snelson beat Myers and Tilley and Baker defeated Myers for Central’s wins. For Tennis, Saxby beat Millard and Baker, with Tilley getting the better of Millard.
The critical seventh set between the two unbeaten players, Snelson and Saxby, was a classic. The first four games were shared, with just a couple of points in it.
Snelson secured the deciding game, 11-7, to give Central a 4-3 lead. Tennis, however, dug in. Tilley beat Baker in four games and then Myers defeated former team-mate Millard to secure Farnborough Tennis Club’s spot in the semi-finals.
