Petersfield Hockey Club’s ladies’ first team continued their winning start to the season with a commanding 8-0 victory at Haslemere Ladies’ third team.
Despite the chill in the air, Petersfield were hot off the mark – putting pressure on to Haslemere straight away.
Controlling the play through the midfield, Del Beaton and Hannah Forrest made decisive passes to spread the play up on both sides of the pitch.
This opened up opportunities to attack for both Fizz Easton and Sophie Trewin to run in behind the Haslemere defence.
The attacks came thick and fast.
Despite Haslemere’s impressive individual skill and superb one-on-one defensive play, Petersfield were finding the connecting play around the opposition players and feeding the ball across the D for the forward line to deflect at goal.
Alex Thomas, Eva Keyes and Anna O’Kelly worked the D tirelessly, switching between themselves to confuse the Haslemere defence and offer options for the midfield line to pass on to.
Despite controlling possession, Petersfield didn’t take for granted how dangerous Haslemere could be with the ball.
On the occasions a Haslemere attack broke through the initial team press, Petersfield’s defence were quick to react and minimise any danger.
Sam Kelly, Karen Llewelyn and Hannah Pike picked out lone Haslemere runners as they attempted to make a break.
Pike, who is playing her first season for Petersfield, solidified her position in the team with consistent clean takes.
Pike picked out stray passes and quickly shifted the ball out wide for Petersfield to break up the wing and counter.
Despite not having the busiest of matches, Petersfield goalkeeper Zoe Simmonds reacted well to Haslemere’s threats to secure a clean sheet.
Petersfield had lots of variety in their play and were determined to win the ball.
O’Kelly helped herself to a hat-trick, and Forrest (2), Easton, Keyes and Trewin were also on the scoresheet for the visitors.
The 8-0 victory continues Petersfield’s very positive start to the season. The team have scored an impressive 26 goals in four matches, and conceded only one goal.
Petersfield Hockey Club’s ladies’ second team secured their first win of the season with a 4-1 victory against Portsmouth’s fourth team.
Eve Pearman, Brooke Edgar (2) and Laura O’Sullivan were the Petersfield goalscorers.
