UGO Monye, Harlequins and England, and Danielle Waterman, Women’s World Cup winner for England, made a surprise appearance at Alton RFC when the club were presented with the sought-after Old Mutual Wealth Kids First Champions award.
The two internationals were at Anstey Park to recognise the approach Alton have taken in improving their coaching and developing the U7 to U13 levels.
Alton RFC are the seventh winners of the Old Mutual grassroots award which recognises the efforts of both schools and clubs to put youngsters first.
In a training session which will live long in the memory of the Alton juniors, Danielle and Ugo passed on their invaluable experience of the fundamental skills of rugby. The two moved round all the age groups, supporting the coaches and getting involved.
Danielle said: “It’s great to see so many young players representing Alton and its testament to the hard work and time the coaches have put into creating a fantastic environment. I still remember the excitement of learning the game myself.”
Alton RFC juniors chairman Rupert Vitoria added: “We’re extremely happy to be recognised for this award. We looked carefully at the way we delivered coaching. This season, we held two Kids First courses here and it has brought a more consistent approach to coaching across the age groups. Our aim is for continued improvement with a kids first focus in everything we do.”
A group of Alton juniors will have the thrill of playing at Twickenham in May. The youngsters will be treated as England players for the day, travelling on the team bus, visiting the England changing-room and singing the national anthem in front of friends and families.
