WITH glorious weather and ideal running conditions, a group of Haslemere Borders runners set of to compete in the Bramley 10/20 road race.

The road race around the village of Bramley in Hampshire is a relatively flat course, consisting of one 10-mile loop, with those opting to run the 20-mile course doing two loops.

Always attracting a large field of runners and one of the few 20-mile races, it is an ideal race for those preparing for marathons with the opportunity for runners to select the race distance that fits in best with their training plan.

Opting for the 10-mile course were Andy Wareham, Sandy McDougall and Clair Wadey. McDougal brought the team home in a personal best time of 1.04.12, earning her 44th place overall, fourth lady and third in her age group. Wareham finished 159th overall in 1.15.40 and Green 205th overall in 1.24.53.

The 20-mile course was the choice for club runners Tom Bampton, Luke Brocks, Jon Fairs, Tom Milns, Luke Shearing and Katy Ward. First home for the men was Fairs in 2.03.55 for 15th place, closely followed by Shearing (2.04.32) in 16th, Luke Brocks (2.05.17), Tom Milns (2.16.00) and Tom Bampton (2.52.41). An impressive run by Milns saw him achieve a new personal best over 20 miles by six minutes 25 seconds.

The only lady competing over the 20-mile course, Katy Ward, finished in an impressive time of 2.21.50 for an overall position of 108th and 13th lady.

Elsewere, club member Karen Sinclair took to Betteshanger Park in Deal, Kent, to take part in the Super heroes or Super villains race. The course runs along the leisure trails of Betteshanger and a loop of the cycle track, making a 3.28-mile loop track. Competitors have the option to run as many loops as they desire. Three competitors completed 36.1 miles, with the fastest being in 6.05.30. Sinclair completed three loops, running a total distance of 9.85 miles in 1.57.03, and in doing so was awarded with a finishers’ medal.

Next weekend see’s the final race in the Southern Cross Country League, and the race hosted by Haslemere Border is always highly competitive as clubs fight for the top positions. The host club is seeking a third win in a row.
