HASLEMERE’s community spirit ensured no one was lonely on Christmas Day when the annual free lunch was once again held at Haslewey Centre in Weyhill.

Organised by St Stephen’s and other local churches, the lunch which welcomes anyone on their own was arranged for 60 guests.

Transport was arranged for many of the older guests who could not get to the centre, with minibus companies AMK and Hoppa providing vehicles and staff for free. They were assisted by an army of volunteers from different parts of the community, who all helped prepare and run the event.

Haslemere mayor Sahran Abeysundara and his partner were seen rolling up their sleeves and helping out for the day. The entertainment was provided by Waverley Ensemble director and violinist Ishani Bhoola, who played festive music and many young families came with their children to sing carols with the guests.

Organiser Louisa Mason said: “It was a delight to see so many different people share in the Christmas spirit.

“All the guests left with a wrapped gift and goodie bag brimming with festive delights, much of which was donated by local businesses. This fantastic community event really did show Haslemere at its best.”
