THE HASLEMERE Art Society celebrated the 125th anniversary of its founding by holding a private viewing of its annual exhibition at the Haslemere Museum.

The private viewing ceremony was opened by well-known sculptor Philip Jackson CVO DL, whose works include the statues of Bobby Moore and Ghandi.

The coveted Allan Thompson Award was won by Mary Howard, for her painting ‘Katie’.

The museum staff chose Sheila Carr and her oil painting ‘Wet Day in Edinburgh’ as the recipient of the Ruth Bacmeister Award.

Maggie Harker, from the Haslemere Art Society, said: “A great time was had by all as reminiscences were exchanged and old friendships renewed.

“The current show is a large, diverse and vibrant show reflecting the society’s energy and strength as it flourishes today.

“It is hoped many local people will come along and take part by voting for their favourite work as well as enjoying seeing what is happening in the local art society today.”
