MORE than 80 people responded to Haslemere Musical Society’s open invitation to attend a Come-and-Sing event – and they raised the rafters at St Christopher’s Church.
The singers taking part rehearsed in the afternoon and gave a rousing performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria with Haslemere Symphony Orchestra and chorus led by Tom Lydon, at 6.30pm.
Spokesman Martin Robson said: “Come-and-Sing was a friendly social occasion, one of our most successful so far. Some 85 singers were welcomed by HMS chairman Marion Thomas.
“Under the baton of choir director Tom Lydon, the chorus rehearsed Vivaldi’s beautiful Gloria.
“The organ was played by composer Clive Osgood, who is director of music at St Bartholomew’s Church, Haslemere.
After a break for tea and cakes, the choir were joined by a group of instrument-alists from the HMS orchestra, for a rehearsal of combined forces – and after more tea and cakes, a performance of the polished piece was given to an appreciative audience.
“It featured solos by altos Louise Thomas and Kate McWhirter, a duet from sopranos Denise Miles and Christine Asbridge, with a soprano solo from Elizabeth Chester. Marion Thomas swapped the podium for an orchestra seat to provide a gentle bassoon accompaniment.”
A collection was taken for Prostate Cancer UK.
•The next HMS concert featuring the Fauré Requiem, Chausson and Holst takes place at Haslemere Hall, at 7.30pm, on Saturday, March 3.
