THE drive by South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt for a multi-storey car park at Haslemere railway station won the backing of Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin on Monday.
Heeding concerns raised by residents unconvinced it would solve the town's parking problems, however, there will be further consultations before it gets the green light.
Haslemere Town Council is proposing to part fund the scheme if a viable business case can be made for it, and mayor Libby Piper joined Mr Hunt at the meeting in Whitehall.
