TOP chamber musicians, the Waldegrave Wind Quintet, not only gave a first-class concert at Grayswood Primary School last Thursday, but also a master class about the instruments they play.

The special visit was made possible by the Haslemere, Hindhead and Headley charity – HHH Concerts – which was founded 80 years ago to stage world class chamber music locally for the benefit of music lovers and aspiring musicians.

HHH hosts regular concerts at St Christopher’s Church, Haslemere, in addition to ‘outreach’ events.

Thanks to a grant from Haslemere Town Council, the quintet also gave an afternoon concert for elderly resident at St Christopher’s Church, attended by town deputy mayor Malcolm Carter.

HHH chairman Pauline Lamb told The Herald: “Grayswood Primary School had an exciting treat when the Waldegrave Wind Quintet performed a concert for the whole school.

“The quintet comprises flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet and French horn, and the players first explained each instrument, their differences and characteristics, with and without reeds. They then played a lively piece by Ibert which was followed by a dramatisation, using instruments and voice, of Peter and the Wolf, wearing appropriate masks.

“The children were totally absorbed in the instruments and the story. After the concert the quintet gave a workshop for Kingfisher class where the children learnt about and practised different musical rhythms, using voices and clapping.

“In the afternoon the quintet gave a concert in St Christopher’s Church for around 60 elderly people from residential homes in the area.

“The wonderfully varied programme included works by Ibert, Mozart, Debussy and Ligety, and some lively Hungarian dances.

“Over tea and biscuits afterwards everyone agreed they had had a most enjoyable afternoon out.”
