The recent return of steam trains to The Watercress Line gave members of Dementia Friendly Alton and Dementia Friendly Hampshire a sunny afternoon trip to savour, with a cream tea served on board in fine china by volunteers.

The day was called Tiaras On The Train in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the traditional carriages were bedecked with Union Flag bunting.

The steam engines and the visit to Alresford station, preserved in 1930s style with its 1875 signal box, stirred memories for many.

The atmosphere was one of happy release after the restrictions on outings imposed by Covid.

Members Lynda and Stan said: “What an iconic train, good fun, lovely tea.”

Fellow member Eileen added: “It was one of the nicest days I have had for a long time.”

The Watercress Line and Dementia Friendly Alton are both winners of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
