FIRE crews from Haslemere, Liphook and Horndean were called out to put out a fast-moving fire on Bramshott Common near Hammer. on Sunday afternoon

Customers at The Prince of Wales pub in Hammer Vale were advised to move their cars to a safe distance just before 4pm when the blaze started to spread quicky as it was fanned by high winds.

Landlord Nick Sam: “We could see it from the pub and we got customers to move their cars further away because it looked at one point as if it was coming down the hill.”

The fire was not deep-seated but it was widespread and the flames flashed across the top of the common, taking the top off the gorse.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The fire covered two hectares of Bramshott Common, but it was spread out within that and burning in different areas. We managed to get it under control very quickly and it took just under an hour to put it out.”

The cause of the blaze is unknown.
