BRIAN HOWARD, ex-mayor of Haslemere, has once again galvanised people in the town to get out their sewing machines and stitch together lengths of bunting to decorate the High Street for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June.

For the last Jubilee the bunting had already been used for the Haslemere Charter Fair and was left in situ for the Queen’s Jubilee, which followed shortly afterwards.

But heavy rain and wind meant the fabric had begun to deteriorate and was not suitable for re-use, hence all the sewing going on now.

Groups of ladies have joined the sewing bee and a substantial operation has been put together.

Kitchen tables all over the town have been swamped by red, white and blue as the rush to get enough bunting for the big week of celebration gets into full swing.

When people drive through the High Street in early June, they are encouraged to look up and smile at the bunting.
