HASLEMERE shoppers can help raise between £8,000 and £12,000 to improve Lion Green’s playground by taking part in a Tesco initiative running for the next week.

Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork to launch a Bags of Help scheme across England and Wales, which will see three community projects in each region awarded three grants of £8,000, £10,000 or £12,000. Community groups in each of Tesco’s 390 regions can bid for a share of the revenue generated from the five pence charge levied on plastic carrier bags.

Haslemere Town Council will be the recipient of one of the three awards. The amount it receives will depend on the public, who can vote for their favourite project at the town’s Tesco up until March 6.

The project with the most votes gets the most money and the council is urging residents to vote for the Lion Green refurbishment.

Mayor Melanie Odell said: “The town council has a budget for play equipment and the fact this will be supplemented by at least £8,000 from the Bags for Help initiative is a great boost for the project.

“The more money we receive from the Tesco initiative, the more we can provide for residents, so I would ask all residents who are visiting Tesco in town to vote for this very worthy cause.”
